Digital Citizenship Program (DCP)

This is an overview and summary of the work the Committee did during the 2013-2014 School Year. The work culminating in the creation of an overarching curriculum structure (identified in the curriculum map) and was presented to the faculty in June, 2014.

We looked at a variety of concepts and definitions of digital citizenship.  We settled on:

Digital Citizenship is a holistic and positive approach to helping children learn how to be safe and secure as well as smart and effective participants in a digital world.

Working paper on digital citizenship. And here is a Teacher's Guide to Digital Citizenship from Edudemic

We structured the program into 5 major topical areas: Technical Literacy, Communication, Awareness, Health & Safety, and Information Literacy. Each major topic area was further defined into 3 sub-topics.

Given this structure, we then overlaid the academic and vocational courses (by year level) and sought to map out recommended lesson topics. This is shown in the curriculum map and the companion curriculum outline.

You will see in the curriculum map that we also looked to associate each major topic of the curriculum to one or more of the fundamental standards for digital literacy and proficiency.  We looked primarily to the Mass DESE Technical Literacy standard and the Mass Vocational Technical Education Frameworks (Strand 6), although we took into account the ISTE Student standards as well as the technology and information literacy components of the AASL Learning Standards.
